The PlayStation is a fifth generation home console developed and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment and released on 3 December 1994 in Japan and in 1995 in North America, Europe and Australia. It is the first of the PlayStation lineup of consoles and includes successor consoles and upgrades such as the special black edition for developers "Net Yaroze", the smaller redesegned version "PS One" and the memory card peripheral "PocketStation". The PlayStation was the first computer entertainment platform to ship over 100 million units, reached nine years after its initial launch, by selling the last PS one units between late 2006 and early 2007, shortly after it was officially discontinued, for a total of 102.49 million units shipped since its launch eleven years earlier.
